Overview

Kom56 is a peripherally-active morphinan, chemically modified from dextromethorphan (DXM). It was developed to reduce blood-brain barrier penetration and central nervous system side effects associated with DXM, as well as to minimize interactions with the cardiac potassium channel hERG and the μ-opioid receptor. The goal of Kom56 is to maintain DXM's beneficial properties, which include increasing glucose tolerance and protecting pancreatic islets from cell death, making it a potential candidate for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus.
