Overview

Komaniin is a novel ellagitannin belonging to the dehydrohexahydroxydiphenoyl (DHHDP) group, isolated from the leaves of *Acer pseudosieboldianum* (Pax) Komarov. It has demonstrated potent chemopreventive and anti-proliferative activities against prostate cancer cells. The compound functions as an epigenetic modulator by inhibiting the activity of DNA methyltransferases, specifically DNMT1, DNMT3a, and DNMT3b. This inhibition leads to the demethylation and subsequent re-expression of the glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) gene, which is frequently silenced during prostate cancer progression. Research suggests that komaniin and related ellagitannins could serve as promising candidates for the treatment of prostate cancer.
