Overview

Kongsheng Zhenzhong Dan (孔圣枕中丹), also known as Kongsheng Zhenzhong Pill, is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula first documented in the Tang Dynasty text 'Thousand Golden Prescriptions' (Bei Ji Qian Jin Yao Fang) by Sun Simiao. The formula traditionally comprises four primary herbal ingredients: Tortoise Plastron (Gui Ban), Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Polygala root (Yuan Zhi), and Acorus tatarinowii rhizome (Shi Chang Pu). According to TCM theory, it functions by tonifying the kidneys, tranquilizing the heart, and soothing the mind to address conditions arising from 'heart-kidney disharmony'. Modern clinical and experimental research has explored its neuroprotective potential for treating cognitive and psychiatric conditions, including insomnia, amnesia, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, pediatric hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and depression. Pharmacological studies suggest its mechanisms may involve the modulation of dopamine (DA) neural signaling pathways and the S100A10/tPA/BDNF pathway.
