Overview
Konvasel (Конвасэл) is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine developed by the Saint Petersburg Scientific Research Institute of Vaccines and Sera (SPbSRIVS) under the Federal Medical Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia for the prevention of COVID-19. Unlike most first-generation COVID-19 vaccines that target the highly variable spike (S) protein, Konvasel utilizes the more conserved nucleocapsid (N) protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus as its primary antigen. This design is intended to provide broader and more durable protection against various viral variants by inducing both humoral and cellular immune responses. The vaccine is produced using a yeast-based recombinant expression system (Pichia pastoris) and was officially registered and approved for use by the Russian Ministry of Health in March 2022.
