Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Korean red ginseng extract is a concentrated preparation derived from the root of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer that has been steamed and dried to produce "red" ginseng. It is widely used as a dietary supplement for its adaptogenic properties—purportedly helping the body resist stress—and for immunomodulatory effects. The main active constituents are a group of saponins called ginsenosides. Mechanistically, Korean red ginseng appears to modulate immune function by increasing T cells (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+), B cells, and white blood cell counts[6]. It also exhibits antioxidant activity and may influence drug metabolism by affecting cytochrome P450 enzymes and drug transporters such as P-glycoprotein[5]. Clinical studies suggest possible benefits in improving cognitive function, supporting immune health, reducing fatigue/stress responses, modestly lowering blood glucose levels in diabetes[2][9], and potentially augmenting treatment in depression[10]. However, most uses are not confirmed by large-scale clinical trials or regulatory approval.
