Koshaheiisan-ka-shakuyaku extract is a traditional Japanese Kampo medicine formulated to treat various gastrointestinal disorders characterized by abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and fullness. It is a modification of the classical Heiisan (Ping Wei San) formula, which is designed to resolve dampness and harmonize the stomach. The addition of 'Kosha' (Cyperus rotundus and Amomum villosum) enhances the formula's ability to promote the movement of Qi and relieve stagnation, while the addition of 'Shakuyaku' (Paeonia lactiflora) provides potent antispasmodic and analgesic effects. Pharmacologically, the extract contains active compounds such as paeoniflorin, which modulates smooth muscle contraction, and glycyrrhizin, which exerts anti-inflammatory effects. It is primarily indicated for patients with weak digestive systems who experience bloating, loss of appetite, and cramping.
