Overview

Kothala Himbutu tea is a traditional herbal beverage made from the stems and roots of the plant *Salacia reticulata*, native to Sri Lanka and South Asia. It is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine for its purported health benefits, particularly in managing diabetes and obesity. The active phytochemicals in *Salacia reticulata*—notably salacinol, kotalanol, mangiferin, and related compounds—are believed to inhibit intestinal enzymes such as alpha-glucosidase and maltase-glucoamylase. This inhibition reduces carbohydrate absorption from the gut, leading to lower postprandial blood glucose levels[1][2][6]. Animal studies suggest additional effects on lipid metabolism and body fat accumulation[8]. Traditionally consumed as a hot infusion (tea), it is also used for digestive health, kidney function support, anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidant activity, asthma relief, rheumatism management, skin conditions (itching), gonorrhea treatment, amenorrhea management (menstrual problems), thirst reduction and weight loss[3][5][7]. Clinical evidence supporting these uses remains limited; most data are from early-stage research or traditional practice.
