Overview

KP-607 is a novel small molecule antifungal agent currently under development by Kaken Pharmaceutical for the topical treatment of onychomycosis (fungal infection of the nails). As a follow-up to Kaken's established antifungal portfolio, which includes efinaconazole (Jublia), KP-607 is designed to effectively penetrate the nail plate to reach the underlying fungal infection in the nail bed. It is being evaluated in Phase I clinical trials in Japan, specifically focusing on nail concentration and safety following repeated once-daily topical application of 5% and 10% solutions. The drug likely acts by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of fungal cell membranes, by targeting the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase, thereby exerting its fungicidal or fungistatic effects against common dermatophytes.
