Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The KP.2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine refers to the updated, monovalent 2024–2025 formulation of messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines designed to target the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron KP.2 subvariant (a descendant of the JN.1 lineage). Developed independently by Pfizer-BioNTech (as Comirnaty) and Moderna (as Spikevax), these vaccines utilize lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated mRNA encoding the prefusion-stabilized spike protein of the KP.2 variant. Upon administration, host cells translate the mRNA to express the KP.2 spike antigen, which stimulates a robust humoral and cellular immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and T-cell activation. The vaccine is indicated for active immunization to prevent COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 in individuals aged 6 months and older, providing updated protection against circulating JN.1-lineage subvariants.
