KP8021 is a regenerative cell therapy candidate consisting of gene-modified induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neural progenitor cells (NPCs). Developed by K Pharma, Inc., a Keio University spin-off, the therapy is specifically designed for the treatment of chronic spinal cord injury. Unlike acute phase treatments, KP8021 utilizes genetic modification to enhance the survival, differentiation, and integration of the transplanted neural cells within the inhibitory environment of a chronic spinal lesion. The program is currently in the preclinical stage, focusing on optimizing gene introduction techniques to improve functional recovery outcomes.
