Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Kpn17 depolymerase is a recombinant bacteriophage-derived polysaccharide depolymerase enzyme encoded by the ORF13 region (which encodes tail tubular protein A) of the lytic bacteriophage Kpn17 (GenBank: OQ790080). It is being developed by researchers at Baskent University and Bilkent University in Turkey. The enzyme specifically targets and degrades the capsular polysaccharides (CPS) of carbapenem-resistant *Klebsiella pneumoniae* (CrKp), including K14/K64, K17, and K39 or KL102/KL149/KL155 capsular types. By degrading the protective bacterial capsule and disrupting established biofilms, Kpn17 depolymerase acts as an antivirulence agent, rendering the bacteria susceptible to host immune clearance and potentially enhancing the efficacy of co-administered antibiotics. It is under preclinical investigation for the treatment of *K. pneumoniae* bacteremia and other capsule-associated infections.
