Krill oil liposomes are a lipid-based nanoparticle drug delivery system designed for the oral treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This formulation incorporates krill oil—which is naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) and phosphatidylcholine—into a stable liposomal bilayer. Unlike liposomes made with free omega-3 fatty acids, krill oil liposomes maintain colloidal stability and resist membrane fusion in gastrointestinal conditions. The system acts by suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and by physically reinforcing the intestinal mucosal barrier. It has been investigated primarily as a vehicle for the corticosteroid budesonide to enhance local delivery to inflamed colonic tissue and reduce systemic endotoxin levels.
