Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Krill powder is a dietary supplement derived from dried and ground Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), a small shrimp-like marine crustacean. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids (notably EPA and DHA), phospholipids, astaxanthin (a potent antioxidant), proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The primary mechanism of action is attributed to its high content of bioavailable omega-3 fatty acids bound to phospholipids, which are more easily absorbed than those in triglyceride form found in fish oil. These components contribute to anti-inflammatory effects, cardiovascular support by improving lipid profiles and reducing blood pressure, joint health through reduction of pain and stiffness associated with arthritis or inflammation, immune system support, skin health via antioxidant activity and improved hydration/elasticity, as well as potential benefits for metabolic health. Krill powder is used both for human supplementation (less common than krill oil) and as an animal feed additive—especially for dogs and cats—to promote joint flexibility, reduce inflammation, improve coat quality/skin condition, prevent obesity-related issues in pets, strengthen the immune system and support cardiovascular function[6].
