Overview

Krillase is a standardized purified extract of proteolytic enzymes, specifically a synergistic combination of endo- and exopeptidases isolated from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba). It is characterized by broad proteolytic activity over a wide temperature range, enabling efficient breakdown of proteins even at low temperatures. Krillase has been tested in chewing gum formulations for human dental hygiene, where it disrupts bacterial biofilm and adhesive proteins of oral bacteria, leading to reduced plaque formation and gingivitis. It is also being developed for wound debridement, chronic wound care, and veterinary dental hygiene in pets. Its key mechanism is the enzymatic degradation of protein biofilms and tissue debris, supporting oral and wound care. As of the current date, Krillase is classified as a Class III medical device in Europe for chronic wound treatment, but is not yet approved for use in the US[1][2][4][6].
