Overview

KTZ-S is a topical antifungal formulation developed by Seren Pharma, currently in Phase 3 clinical development for the treatment of fungal infections. The active pharmaceutical ingredient in KTZ-S is ketoconazole, a synthetic imidazole-derivative antifungal agent. Ketoconazole exerts its therapeutic effect by inhibiting the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase (CYP51), which is essential for the biosynthesis of ergosterol. Ergosterol is a vital component of the fungal cell membrane; its depletion, coupled with the accumulation of toxic methylated sterol precursors, leads to structural and functional disruption of the membrane. This results in either fungistatic or fungicidal activity depending on the concentration and the specific pathogen. KTZ-S is specifically formulated as a soap for topical application, facilitating the treatment of superficial mycoses such as tinea infections and seborrheic dermatitis.
