Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Kudzu root (Puerariae lobatae Radix) is the tuberous root of Pueraria lobata, a perennial vine in the legume family. It is a traditional Chinese medicine (known as Gegen) with a long history of use for promoting circulation and treating alcohol intoxication. Kudzu root is typically used as a crude root powder or a standardized extract, such as NPI-031 (Alkontrol-Herbal). Its primary active constituents are isoflavones, including puerarin, daidzin, and daidzein. The extract is primarily investigated for reducing alcohol intake in individuals with alcohol use disorder, a mechanism mediated by daidzin's inhibition of mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2). Additionally, due to its phytoestrogenic components, kudzu root has been clinically evaluated for alleviating menopausal symptoms.
