Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Kushen Ningjiao (also known under the brand name Kunlishu) is a traditional Chinese medicine gel formulated with total alkaloids of matrine, a bioactive compound extracted from the roots of *Sophora flavescens* (Kushen). It is approved in China for vaginal administration to treat chronic gynecological inflammatory conditions, including cervicitis, cervical erosion, vaginitis, and vaginal yeast infections, owing to its local anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Additionally, Kushen Ningjiao is being evaluated for rectal administration as a physical spacer and protective agent during three-dimensional brachytherapy for cervical cancer. In this context, the gel physically inflates the rectum, expanding the distance between the posterior rectal wall and the high-dose radiation source, thereby reducing radiation exposure and preventing chronic radiation proctitis.
