Overview

KVD001 is a small molecule plasma kallikrein inhibitor developed for the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME). It works by inhibiting plasma kallikrein (KLKB1), an enzyme that increases blood vessel leakiness and edema in the eye, which contributes to vision loss in DME. The drug is administered via intravitreal injection directly into the eye. It was initially developed by Vantia Therapeutics and is currently being developed by KalVista Pharmaceuticals. The drug has been investigated primarily for patients with DME who have had insufficient response to anti-VEGF therapies. Clinical trials have shown that while it did not meet its primary endpoint in a Phase 2 trial, it demonstrated safety and some protective effects against vision loss in certain patient subgroups[1][2][3][5][6].
