KW-021 is a pegylated recombinant interferon-alpha being developed by Kawin Technology for the treatment of chronic Hepatitis B. By conjugating the interferon protein with polyethylene glycol (PEG), the drug achieves a prolonged half-life and sustained therapeutic plasma concentrations compared to non-pegylated interferons. KW-021 exerts its antiviral effects by binding to the Type I interferon receptor (IFNAR), which triggers the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. This leads to the induction of various interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that inhibit viral replication, degrade viral RNA, and enhance the host's immune response by activating natural killer cells and T-lymphocytes to target Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected hepatocytes.
