KYN-5356 is a first-in-class, potent, and highly selective small molecule inhibitor of kynurenine aminotransferase II (KAT-II), a key enzyme in the kynurenine pathway. It is being developed for the treatment of cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia (CIAS). By inhibiting KAT-II, KYN-5356 reduces levels of kynurenic acid in the brain; elevated kynurenic acid has been implicated as a driver of cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. The drug is administered orally and has demonstrated good safety and pharmacokinetic properties in phase 1 studies. Originally discovered by Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation (MTPC), it is now being developed by Kynexis Therapeutics under an exclusive worldwide license from MTPC[1][2][3][4][5][7].
