kynomycin

Kynomycin is a novel cyclic lipopeptide antibiotic developed by Mudanjiang Youbo Pharmaceutical, a subsidiary of Shandong Buchang Pharmaceuticals, for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI). Classified as a Class 1.1 innovative drug in China, kynomycin is designed to target serious infections caused by Gram-positive pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Its mechanism of action is similar to that of daptomycin, involving calcium-dependent binding to the bacterial cell membrane. This binding triggers the insertion of the molecule's lipophilic tail into the membrane, leading to rapid depolarization and the leakage of intracellular ions, particularly potassium. This disruption of the membrane potential halts essential cellular processes such as DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis, resulting in rapid bactericidal activity. Kynomycin is currently in Phase 3 clinical development in China.
