Overview

Kytta-Balsam f is a topical herbal and small molecule combination cream developed by Merck Selbstmedikation GmbH (now part of P&G Health). It contains a high concentration (35%) of comfrey root extract (*Symphytum officinale*) and 1.2% methyl nicotinate. The comfrey root extract provides anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, primarily attributed to constituents such as allantoin and rosmarinic acid. Methyl nicotinate acts as a rubefacient, promoting local blood circulation and providing a warming sensation to alleviate muscle tension and rheumatic pain. It is indicated for the treatment of acute upper and lower back pain, as well as rheumatic complaints including muscle pain, joint discomfort, sciatica, and lumbago. Clinical data from a Phase III trial in Germany demonstrated its statistically significant superiority over both methyl nicotinate alone and placebo in reducing pain during movement.
