Lýsisstílar (Lysis suppositories) is a rectal suppository formulation developed by Lipid Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of acute constipation, particularly in pediatric populations. The active ingredient is a 30% free fatty acid (FFA) extract derived from omega-3 fish oil (cod-liver oil), comprising a complex mixture of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The formulation acts as a laxative, likely through local irritation of the rectal mucosa and osmotic effects that stimulate bowel emptying. In a Phase 2 pediatric clinical trial conducted in Iceland, Lýsisstílar demonstrated efficacy comparable to standard treatments such as Klyx (docusate sodium and sorbitol) with a favorable safety profile and no serious toxic effects.
