Overview

L‑2‑Amino‑6‑methylene‑pimelic acid is a synthetic, non-proteinogenic amino acid and structural analog of meso-diaminopimelate. It acts as a potent competitive inhibitor of diaminopimelate dehydrogenase, an enzyme involved in the bacterial biosynthesis pathway for meso-diaminopimelate and L‑lysine. This pathway is essential for the growth of certain bacteria but absent in humans, making the enzyme—and its inhibitors—of interest for antibacterial drug development. The compound has been studied primarily as a biochemical probe and experimental tool rather than as a therapeutic agent[1][3][8].
