Both are naturally occurring amino acid derivatives involved in mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism and energy production. L-carnitine facilitates the transport of long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for beta-oxidation, while acetyl-L-carnitine provides an acetyl group that can be used in energy metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis.
