Overview

L-asparaginase bacteriana modificada (EcM) is a recombinant modified bacterial L-asparaginase enzyme under development by Fiocruz (specifically the Carlos Chagas Institute/Fiocruz Paraná) for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The drug is designed to combine the high stability and antileukemic activity of Escherichia coli L-asparaginase with the specificity of Pectobacterium carotovorum L-asparaginase. By modifying the enzyme to remove nonspecific activity (such as glutaminase activity), EcM aims to provide a safer, less toxic, and more specific treatment option with fewer adverse side effects compared to conventional E. coli-derived L-asparaginase therapies.
