Overview

L-benzylsuccinic acid is the (R)-enantiomer of 2-benzylsuccinic acid, a small molecule dicarboxylic organic compound with the formula C11H12O4 and a molecular weight of approximately 208.21 g/mol[1][4][5]. It is structurally related to succinic acid with a benzyl group at the 2-position. L-benzylsuccinic acid acts as an inhibitor of carboxypeptidase A1 and carboxypeptidase B2 enzymes[2][3], which are involved in protein digestion and various metabolic pathways such as complement and coagulation cascades. It has been used experimentally as a biochemical tool for enzyme inhibition studies but does not have established pharmaceutical indications or approved therapeutic uses. Its mechanism involves competitive inhibition at the active site of target carboxypeptidases[3]. The compound is primarily used in research settings.
