Overview

L-carnitine + N-acetyl cysteine is a combination of two amino acid-derived compounds commonly used as dietary supplements. L-carnitine (often in the form of acetyl-L-carnitine) plays a key role in mitochondrial energy production by facilitating the transport of fatty acids into mitochondria for beta-oxidation. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a precursor to glutathione, an important intracellular antioxidant, and has additional roles as an anti-inflammatory and mucolytic agent. The combination has been studied for its synergistic antioxidant effects, neuroprotection, enhancement of DNA repair mechanisms after cellular stress such as radiation exposure[1][3], support for mitochondrial function and energy metabolism[2], improvement in metabolic parameters including insulin sensitivity[4], and potential benefits in neurological disorders. Both components can cross the blood-brain barrier and may modulate neurotransmitter systems including glutamate balance and acetylcholine levels[2]. The mixture is primarily marketed as a dietary supplement but individual components have pharmaceutical uses.
