Overview
L-epicatechin (also known as (-)-epicatechin) is a natural flavanol polyphenol found in cocoa, green tea, and other plant sources. It is being investigated by Biochem Industries as a therapeutic candidate for cognitive impairment. In a Phase 0 clinical trial in Australia, l-epicatechin is evaluated in combination with ayahuasca alkaloids in a single oral microdose formulation. L-epicatechin is believed to exert neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects through multiple mechanisms, including the activation of the 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway, indirect inhibition of beta-secretase 1 (BACE1) to reduce amyloidogenic processing of amyloid precursor protein, and mitochondrial protection.
