Overview

l-glucose is the L-enantiomer of glucose, an aldohexose monosaccharide that is the mirror image of naturally occurring d-glucose and shares the same chemical formula C6H12O6 but opposite stereochemistry at all chiral centers.[1][3] It is not appreciably metabolized by human cells because it is not a substrate for hexokinase in glycolysis, making it effectively non-nutritive while retaining a sweet taste similar to d-glucose.[1] l-glucose has been investigated as a low-calorie sweetener suitable for people with diabetes, as an osmotic laxative and colon-cleansing agent before colonoscopy, and its derivative l-glucose pentaacetate has shown insulinotropic effects that could be relevant for type 2 diabetes therapy, but high production costs and lack of regulatory approvals have limited its development as a pharmaceutical or marketed food ingredient.[1][2]
