L-glufosinate is the L-isomer of glufosinate, a non-selective, broad-spectrum contact herbicide derived from the naturally occurring compound phosphinothricin produced by Streptomyces bacteria. It acts as a glutamine synthetase inhibitor, leading to accumulation of toxic levels of ammonia in plant tissues and subsequent plant death. The herbicidal effect is due to irreversible inhibition of glutamine synthetase, which disrupts ammonia detoxification and halts photosynthesis. L-glufosinate is used primarily for burndown and post-emergent weed control in crops genetically engineered for resistance to this compound (e.g., canola, corn, cotton, soybean). It has little or no soil activity and requires foliar application for efficacy[1][3][4][5].
