Drug intelligence / Profile preview
l-lactic acid + citric acid monohydrate is a **non-hormonal vaginal acidifying contraceptive combination** used as part of the approved on-demand vaginal gel product Phexxi, which also contains potassium bitartrate. In this combination context, the acids help maintain the vaginal environment at an acidic physiologic pH that is inhospitable to sperm, thereby reducing sperm motility and lowering the likelihood of fertilization. The product was developed by Evofem for prevention of pregnancy in females of reproductive potential and is administered intravaginally immediately before or up to 1 hour before intercourse as a gel formulation.
