Overview

L-lactic acid-ethylene glycol copolymer is a synthetic, biodegradable block copolymer utilized as an injectable dermal filler for aesthetic and reconstructive purposes. It consists of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segments. The PLLA component serves as a biostimulator that induces endogenous collagen production, while the PEG component enhances the hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and degradation profile of the microspheres. Primarily indicated for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds, the substance is injected into the deep dermis or subcutaneous layer. Upon injection, the polymer microspheres act as a scaffold that triggers a controlled, subclinical inflammatory response, recruiting macrophages and stimulating fibroblasts to synthesize new Type I and Type III collagen. Over several months, the copolymer is naturally metabolized into lactic acid and glycolic acid, leaving behind a reinforced collagen matrix that provides long-lasting volume restoration and skin texture improvement.
