Overview

L-NMMA (NG-monomethyl-L-arginine) is a small molecule, non-selective inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). It is utilized as a research pharmaceutical by the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Phase 1 mechanistic studies to investigate cerebrovascular control in individuals with metabolic syndrome. By blocking the production of nitric oxide, a key mediator of vasodilation, researchers use L-NMMA to evaluate whether impaired nitric oxide signaling is responsible for reduced cerebral blood flow and paradoxical vasoconstriction observed in metabolic syndrome patients during acute insulin surges. While L-NMMA has been historically investigated for therapeutic use in conditions like cardiogenic shock under the name tilarginine, its application in this context is as a pharmacological tool to elucidate disease pathophysiology.
