Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Spartate is an oral pharmaceutical formulation of **l-ornithine l-aspartate (LOLA)**, developed and marketed by **Obsons Pharmaceuticals**. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of hyperammonemia associated with acute and chronic liver diseases, such as liver cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy. The drug consists of two endogenous amino acids, ornithine and aspartic acid, which act as substrates in metabolic pathways for ammonia detoxification. Ornithine stimulates the urea cycle in hepatocytes by acting as a substrate for carbamoyl phosphate synthetase, while aspartate (and ornithine via conversion to glutamate) provides the substrate for glutamine synthesis in both the liver and the brain. By enhancing these pathways, Spartate effectively lowers systemic ammonia levels, thereby mitigating the neurotoxic effects associated with liver failure.
