Overview

L-PRF (Leukocyte- and Platelet-Rich Fibrin) is an autologous, second-generation platelet concentrate used as a biological scaffold in regenerative medicine. Developed from the patient's own blood, it contains a dense fibrin matrix enriched with leukocytes and platelets. This biomaterial acts as a reservoir for the sustained release of growth factors, such as transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which are critical for tissue regeneration, angiogenesis, and wound healing. In the context of periodontology, Universitaire Ziekenhuizen KU Leuven is evaluating L-PRF for the surgical treatment of periodontal intra-bony defects to promote bone and soft tissue repair.
