Overview

L-serine is a naturally occurring, non-essential α-amino acid used in the biosynthesis of proteins. It contains an α-amino group, a carboxyl group, and a side chain consisting of a hydroxymethyl group, classifying it as a polar amino acid. L-serine is synthesized in the human body and plays critical roles in cellular metabolism, including serving as a precursor for glycine, cysteine, sphingolipids, purines, pyrimidines, and folate derivatives. It is essential for nucleotide synthesis and central nervous system function. Industrially produced from glycine and methanol via hydroxymethyltransferase catalysis[1][7][9].
