Overview

L-thioproline is a nonproteinogenic amino acid and a proline derivative characterized by the presence of a thiazolidine ring with an L-stereochemistry. It is also known as (R)-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid. Naturally occurring but rare, it can be formed in biological systems through the reaction of cysteine and formaldehyde. As an amino acid derivative, it has been studied for its antioxidant properties and potential role as a geroprotector—protecting cells from oxidative stress by acting as an efficient sacrificial antioxidant. Research suggests possible utility as a dietary supplement to protect against degenerative diseases associated with oxidative stress, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, atherosclerosis, and certain cancers[1][2][7][8]. There are no approved pharmaceutical indications or clinical trials beyond preclinical research.
