L-threonic acid is a small molecule organic compound classified as a sugar acid and derivative of threose. It is the L-isomer of threonic acid and can be found as a metabolite of ascorbic acid (vitamin C)[8][6][3]. L-threonic acid itself has been investigated for its potential cognitive benefits; it is used in some dietary supplements to improve memory and cognitive function[1]. The magnesium salt form—magnesium L-threonate—is more commonly studied and marketed for its ability to increase brain magnesium levels and potentially enhance synaptic plasticity via modulation of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor[1][7]. Clinical studies have explored its use in conditions such as ADHD with promising results[5], but it remains primarily an experimental or investigational compound with no major pharmaceutical approvals. Brand name products containing this ingredient include EnBrace HR and EnLyte[3].
