Drug intelligence / Profile preview
La-derived peptides are therapeutic peptide candidates being developed by the National Institutes of Health (specifically the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research) for the treatment of skeletal disorders, such as fibrous dysplasia (FD). The La protein (Lupus La antigen) acts as a key regulator of osteoclast fusion and multinucleation at the cell surface. In pathological states like fibrous dysplasia, excessive osteoclast fusion leads to abnormally large osteoclasts and hyper-resorption of bone. La-derived peptides inhibit this cell-cell fusion and bone resorption process while maintaining the release of osteoclast-coordinating factors like Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF), thereby preserving the crucial crosstalk between osteoclasts and osteoblasts.
