Drug intelligence / Profile preview
LA1 peptide (also known as La1) is a synthetic 12-amino acid cyclic peptide identified via phage display library screening that specifically binds to the surface of *Leishmania amazonensis* metacyclic promastigotes (MPs). Developed by researchers at São Paulo State University (UNESP) in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University and Mercer University, the peptide is designed to inhibit the interaction and internalization of *L. amazonensis* parasites into host phagocytic cells, such as THP-1 macrophages. By blocking parasite entry, LA1 peptide serves as a species-specific candidate for the prevention and early intervention of cutaneous leishmaniasis at the sand fly bite site, or as a tool to identify parasite ligands for vaccine development.
