Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Labisia pumila var alata extract (commonly known as Kacip Fatimah) is a standardized botanical extract derived from the Southeast Asian herb *Labisia pumila* var. *alata*. Developed primarily by Medika Natura (formerly Orchid Life) in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia, the extract is being investigated as a therapeutic agent for obesity, metabolic syndrome, and postmenopausal symptoms. It contains bioactive compounds such as gallic acid and other polyphenols. Mechanistically, the extract acts as a phytoestrogen, binding to estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ), and has been shown to downregulate 11-beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (HSD11B1) expression and reduce corticosterone levels in metabolic tissues. In clinical trials, a standardized formulation of the extract (SKF7) demonstrated efficacy in reducing body weight, body mass index, and waist circumference in individuals with obesity.
