Overview

LAC-Shield is a postbiotic functional ingredient consisting of the heat-killed bacterial strain *Lactobacillus paracasei* MCC1849. Developed by Morinaga Milk Industry, it is designed to support immune function by interacting with immunocytes in the small intestine's Peyer's patches. This interaction stimulates the production of key cytokines, including interleukin-12 (IL-12) and type I interferons, which play critical roles in antiviral and overall immune responses. Clinical research indicates that LAC-Shield may help reduce the risk and severity of common cold symptoms, improve mood states under stress, and enhance the efficacy of influenza vaccinations, particularly in elderly populations. As a heat-killed (non-viable) ingredient, it is highly stable and suitable for use in a wide range of food, beverage, and dietary supplement applications where traditional live probiotics might not survive processing or storage.
