Lactase is an enzyme replacement therapy primarily indicated for the management of lactose intolerance. It functions as a beta-galactosidase, catalyzing the hydrolysis of the disaccharide lactose into its constituent monosaccharides, glucose and galactose, which are then readily absorbed in the small intestine. In individuals with lactase deficiency, undigested lactose passes into the colon where it undergoes bacterial fermentation, resulting in symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, and osmotic diarrhea. Exogenous lactase preparations, often derived from the fungus *Aspergillus oryzae* or the yeast *Kluyveromyces lactis*, are administered orally alongside dairy consumption to mitigate these symptoms. It is widely available as a dietary supplement and over-the-counter medication in various forms, including tablets, chewables, and liquid drops for infants.
