Overview

Lactate-13C is a stable isotope-labeled small molecule tracer used as a diagnostic and research tool to study lactate metabolism in vivo. Developed by **Karolinska University Hospital** in collaboration with **Karolinska Institutet**, it is administered as an intravenous bolus to measure lactate appearance and clearance rates (lactate kinetics) using non-compartmental pharmacokinetic modeling. Unlike radioactive tracers, 13C is a stable carbon isotope, making it suitable for clinical research in sensitive populations. The compound is primarily utilized to investigate metabolic dysfunction in critically ill patients, such as those suffering from sepsis or septic shock in the intensive care unit (ICU). It serves as a probe for the endogenous lactate metabolic pathway rather than a therapeutic agent.
