Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lacteol Fort is a probiotic preparation containing lyophilized heat-killed *Lactobacillus acidophilus* LB as its active ingredient. It is manufactured by Rameda Pharmaceutical Company in Egypt under license from Axcan Pharma. While traditionally indicated for the treatment of diarrhea, it is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 randomized clinical trial led by Ain Shams University for its potential to mitigate antipsychotic-induced weight gain in adult patients with schizophrenia. The therapeutic approach is based on the modulation of the gut microbiome, which has been implicated in the metabolic side effects and weight gain associated with atypical antipsychotic medications.
