Overview

A topical live biotherapeutic product (LBP) consisting of a consortium of nine specific lactic acid bacterial (LAB) strains originally isolated from the honey stomach of honeybees. Developed by researchers at Lund University, this formulation is designed for the treatment of chronic venous leg ulcers. The consortium includes multiple strains of *Lactobacillus plantarum*, along with *Lactobacillus paracasei*, *Lactobacillus brevis*, *Lactobacillus coryniformis*, *Lactobacillus salivarius*, and *Lactobacillus kunkeei*. These bacteria work synergistically to produce a range of antimicrobial metabolites, including lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and bacteriocins, which inhibit the growth of multi-drug resistant wound pathogens such as MRSA and *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. Beyond its antimicrobial properties, the formulation is intended to promote wound healing by modulating the local inflammatory environment and stimulating tissue regeneration.
