Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lacticaseibacillus paracasei K56 is a novel probiotic strain isolated from the intestine of a healthy child, being developed by Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group. [7, 10, 11, 14] It is under investigation for its potential benefits in obesity and psychological stress. [2, 9] The proposed mechanism of action involves modulating the gut microbiota to create a more favorable composition for health. [2, 3, 9] In a human pilot study involving obese adults, daily supplementation with K56 at a dose of 2 × 10^9 CFU for 60 days led to significant reductions in percent body fat, visceral fat area, total body fat mass, waist circumference, and glycosylated hemoglobin compared to baseline. [2, 15] Animal studies have also shown that L. paracasei K56 can attenuate high-fat diet-induced obesity, reduce fat accumulation, and alleviate insulin resistance. [3] Another study in students suggested that K56 supplementation may alleviate stress and anxiety, possibly through the gut-brain axis by altering microbial composition and increasing metabolites like butyric acid. [9, 11] The strain has been incorporated into a commercial ambient fermented lactobacillus drink called Changyi 100%. [7]
