Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lacticaseibacillus paracasei PS23 (PS23) is a specific probiotic strain, also known as a psychobiotic, developed by Bened Biomedical Co. Ltd. [13, 14]. It can be administered as a live probiotic (L-PS23) or a heat-treated postbiotic (HT-PS23). [20] The strain is being investigated for a wide range of therapeutic benefits, including anxiety reduction, sleep improvement, cognitive function, exercise performance, and ameliorating symptoms associated with aging, such as muscle loss and gastrointestinal dysfunction. [10, 13, 15] Clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing anxiety and improving sleep in stressed individuals, as well as alleviating cognitive and physical symptoms of long COVID. [11, 13, 23] Its mechanism of action is believed to involve the modulation of the gut-brain axis, leading to balanced neurotransmitter levels (dopamine and serotonin), increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and reduced cortisol. [15, 17] It also exhibits anti-inflammatory effects and has been shown to preserve mitochondrial function. [15, 17]
