Overview

Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus G7 is a novel probiotic strain isolated from the yogurt of herdsmen in Qinghai Province, China. [1] It is being investigated for its potential to prevent and treat ulcerative colitis (UC). In a preclinical mouse model of DSS-induced colitis, oral administration of the G7 strain was shown to alleviate disease symptoms, including weight loss and colon shortening. [1] The mechanism of action involves modulating the host immune system and the gut microbiota. [1] Specifically, L. rhamnosus G7 reduces the serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, while increasing the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. [1] It also helps rebalance the composition of the intestinal flora by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria like *Faecalibaculum* and decreasing the abundance of *Bacteroides* and *Escherichia_Shigella*. [1] In vitro evaluations confirmed the strain has a good safety profile and tolerance to gastric acid and bile salts, suggesting its viability as an oral probiotic. [1]
